Lower School Professional Development - Units of Study in Writing Program
On Thursday, August 31st in the Lower School Professional Development Sessions at The Kew-Forest School, Ms. Lowery and Ms. Brooks led a refresher course about the Columbia University Teachers College Units of Study in Writing program.
Ms. Lowery and Ms. Brooks both participated in a week-long course at Columbia this summer, where they studied with Lucy Calkins, the program's much-renowned founder, as well as listened to guest speakers such as the author Katherine Paterson (of Bridge to Terabithia fame, among many others).
Afterwards, the LS faculty gathered for a session focused on anti-bias education. After the group viewed Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's powerful TED Talk "The Danger of a Single Story,"
Mrs. Rayer spoke about John Nimmo's work around leading anti-bias programs for young children. We ended the session by pairing up to share photos of ourselves as children, reflecting on how our identities influence our work as anti-bias educators.
