Hour of Code

Last week, K-F participated in the internationally recognized Hour of Code celebration in recognition of Computer Science week (for more information about the importance of the Hour of Code, please see Code.org).

On Wednesday, December 7th, our Upper School students had the opportunity to listen to volunteers from Google speak about the benefits of programming as well as a short amount of time for questions and answers. Later in the day, both Middle and Upper School students had the opportunity to try the coding activities on https://code.org/ during their study hall periods!

On Thursday, December 8th, the Early Childhood class participated in offline "Paper Coding", using special markers and our new Ozobot to learn about loops. They had fun making the OZObot move and dance to the song "I like to Move it Move it". The children in Kindergarten through Fifth grade had a great time working in cross-grade "buddy" pairs learning how to code using Drag and Drop coding using the Lightbot puzzles and the Moana Puzzles provided by the code.org website. The "big buddies" mentored the "little buddies," and everyone worked together so well! The children also had help from our special guest visitors from Google, Mr. Baksh (Kindergarten and Grade 3 parent) and his colleagues Mr. Cho and Mr. Mowry.

A special thank you to our Library Director and Lower School Technology teacher: Mrs. Amy Perez as well as to our special visitors from Google: Mr. Baksh, Mr. Cho, and Mr. Mowry for bringing the Hour o fCode campaign to our K-F community and for inspiring our students to learn more about computer programming.
